From 1980s Disaster to Dream Bathroom
The Situation
If you’ve been around for a while, you know this bathroom wasn’t just a cosmetic makeover—it was a full-blown snowball effect adventure.
What started as a simple renovation quickly uncovered a list of surprises no homeowner wants to find: failing cast iron plumbing, mold, wood rot, and water damage. It felt like every time we solved one problem, another one was waiting behind the wall. Literally.
But after six months of hard work, many trips to Home Depot, and more than a few moments of wondering what we’d gotten ourselves into, we finally have the bathroom we’d always dreamed of. Well. . .kind of.
Our dream would've been to gut it, move the walls, relocate the plumbing, and completely rethink the layout, but the budget said otherwise. Instead, I tackled the renovation in phases and did most of the work myself (aside from plumbing, because I stick to my strengths).
Before
This bathroom had all the classic 1980s charm...and not in a good way. It felt bland and dated when we wanted a space that felt timeless, bright, and easier to maintain.
After
The finished space is everything we hoped it would be. Every decision was made with both beauty and function in mind. From groutless shower walls and custom penny tile floors to a warm wood vanity, heated bidet toilet seat, layered lighting, and thoughtful storage, this room finally works for everyday life.
One of my biggest goals was creating a bathroom that looked custom without the custom price tag and didn’t require constant upkeep. Choosing materials that are both beautiful and practical was just as important as creating a space we love walking into every morning.

This renovation stretched us in every possible way, but I’d do it all over again. It’s proof that even the most outdated spaces can become something you absolutely love. Sometimes the biggest transformations start with the biggest messes.
As always. . .do it scared. 🤍
